Movie Review: The Mighty Macs

I had the pleasure of watching an advance screening of inspirational film The Mighty Macs. Opening in theaters today, The Mighty Macs is a classic, feel-good true story about a struggling women's college which pulls together a winning basketball team.

Here is the scoop from the official website:

It's 1971. Cathy Rush is a woman ahead of her time … and she's about to embark on an adventure for the ages. A new era is dawning in the country and in collegiate athletics, where a national champion will be crowned for the first time in women's basketball.

In the lead up to this historical season, major universities are preparing their game plans to win that first title. Meanwhile a tiny all-women's Catholic college in Philadelphia has a more modest goal: find a coach before the season begins. Providentially, Cathy Rush is about to find Immaculata College.

Recently married, Cathy is dealing with the aftermath of a truncated playing career. While cultural norms would have her staying at home, she's willing to do the hard work necessary to help her new team reach their goals—or perhaps she's just trying to achieve her unfulfilled dreams through them.

From the beginning, her challenges are as imposing as the big-school teams Immaculata will face on the court. Cathy learns there is no gymnasium on campus, she receives little support from the school's Mother Superior, and the school is in dire financial straits. To top it off, she may not even have enough players to field a team!

While it appears the Macs don't have a prayer, all hope is not lost. With the help of Sister Sunday—a spunky assistant coach—and the support of a booster club of elderly nuns, Coach Rush creates a new game plan that just might bring the team—and the school—together.

Will this pioneer buck cultural norms and spur her rag-tag team to unexpected heights? Or will her hard-driving ways create a wedge between the coach and everyone around her? One thing's for certain: there's never been anyone like Cathy Rush at Immaculata!

THE MIGHTY MACS is based on the incredible true story of the 1971-72 Immaculata College team that started in obscurity but became the original Cinderella story in women's basketball. This team of pioneers went from barely making that inaugural tournament to the first dynasty in their game. And Cathy Rush, the woman that was ahead of her time, became immortalized when she was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.

THE MIGHTY MACS stars Carla Gugino as Cathy Rush; David Boreanaz as her husband, NBA referee Ed Rush; Marley Shelton as Sister Sunday; and Academy Award and Tony Award winner Ellen Burstyn as Mother St. John. The film was written, directed, and produced by Tim Chambers. The film's executive producers are Pat Croce, the former president of the NBA's Philadelphia 76ers, and Vince Curran, a successful businessman and former basketball star at Penn. Curran and Chambers are founders and partners of Quaker Media.

Get ready to cheer on a true Cinderella team when THE MIGHTY MACS opens in theaters on October 21.

I loved this movie!

Carla Gugino has been one of my favorite actresses since I first saw her years ago in a mini-series called The Buccaneers. Supported by a strong cast including David Boreanaz and the incomparable Ellen Burstyn, The Mighty Macs delivers a solid and enjoyable film. This movie will have you cheering, not to mention spur any young person to never give up on their dreams.

Movie Preview ~ Field of Vision

Family Movie Night  returns this Saturday, June 11th, 8PM EST on NBC with FIELD OF VISION.

A Synopsis from the official website:

Through mysterious footage captured on an old malfunctioning video camera, Sinclair High School's star quarterback, Tyler McFarland, learns that some of his teammates have been bullying Cory Walker, a troubled new transfer student. Aware that sharing this information with the coach might get his friends kicked off the team and ultimately cost the school the state championship, Tyler must choose what's more important: winning or doing what's right.

As these events unfold, the camera also reveals more surprising footage to Tyler's kid sister Lucy. She learns that Cory has a secret past, unknown even to him. Now Lucy must convince her mom (Faith Ford, Murphy Brown) and family that the camera's revealing insight is not a product of her imagination as she enlists their help to find the answers Cory so desperately needs. It's a compelling and intriguing story that shows both the challenges and rewards of doing the right thing even when it's tough to do.

My Review:

Bullying is not a new issue. As someone who was shy, book-smart, and from a broken home I identified with Cory Walker. I remember hiding and not going on the playground fearing harassment.. I know what it's like to have people whisper behind your back or say hurtful things because you are perceived as a little "different". Movies depicting the problem of bullying and offering workable solutions can be valuable tools for learning.

I enjoyed watching Field of Vision. I'll be honest. It's a typical "feel good" popcorn movie. While the story and acting were solid I kept waiting for some other dramatic shoe to drop but it never did. I also don't understand inserting the "magick camera" into the plot. I'm sure it was meant to add a fantasy element for child viewers but if anything I think it took away from the deeper lessons available to young viewers about the problem of bullying.

Field of Vision does a fair job in presenting the problem of bullying in school. Bullies are often insecure. They pick on people who appear weak or won't fight back to build their self worth. Field of Vision offers the opportunity to experience what the proper response to bullying should be. Field of Vision is entertaining for children and adults alike. The real bonus will be the discussion which could be opened between kids and adults on how to deal with bullies.

Family Movie Night Preview

Make sure you gather the family this Saturday, April 16th, at 8 PM EST on FOX for the World Premiere of Truth Be Told, starring Candance Cameron Bure, David James Elliot, and Ronny Cox!

Walmart and P&G have brought back a great tradition…FAMILY MOVIE NIGHT. A chance to sit down with your kids and watch a family friendly movie that will have you laughing one minute and tearing up the next. Truth Be Told is the third Family Movie Night film I've had the pleasure to preview. The great thing about these films: interesting/relevant stories, great acting. I have enjoyed every movie Family Movie Night has aired so far this year and TRUTH BE TOLD is no exception.

Here's the scoop (from the official website):

When leading marriage counselor Annie Morgan (Candace Cameron Bure) is offered an opportunity to host a relationship talk show, she jumps at the chance. But fearful that being single might ruin her big break, she conspires with an old college friend and recent widower, Mark Crane (David James Elliott), to pose as a married couple with kids. Their story starts to unravel when Annie and Mark join her eccentric soon-to-be boss (Ronny Cox) for a weekend at his ranch in New Mexico. Comical misunderstandings mark the event as Annie struggles to keep up the ruse, finding herself emotionally invested and conflicted by her own conscience. Will she confess the truth about her marital status and her feelings for Mark… and will the truth set them free?

This film was really enjoyable (and dare I say cute!). I laughed, I cried, I even felt the girlie "awwww" factor a few times (yes…this is a chick flick. Get over it!). The pacing of the story was excellent, scenery beautiful, and the characters were people you wanted to like….even when you cringed because of the way they progressed deeper into lies which could blow up in their faces at any moment. I think the story makes an excellent point that truth is important in all relationships (parent/child, husband/wife, employer/employee). It could also launch a great conversation of "do the ends justify the means?"

We all know there is never anything good to watch on Saturday night 8-10PM EST which is why Family Movie Night is stepping up and offering quality programming you can enjoy with your  whole family.

So "COWBOY UP" and tune in to Truth Be Told.

It'll be fun!

Movie Preview ~ A Change of Plans w/Giveaway!

If you need something to do this Saturday, January 8th, then gather your family and some snack food, sit down at 8PM EST to tune into your local FOX channel and watch the new Family Movie Night World Premiere Presentation of A Change of Plans!

Here's a story synopsis from the website:

Up to this point, Sally Danville's life has played out just as she hoped it would. A beautiful and free-spirited musician, she and her fighter-pilot husband, Jason, live life on the go, free of domestic responsibilities. But with a single phone call from Child & Family Services case worker, Dorothy (Phylicia Rashad, The Cosby Show), she learns that things don't always go according to plan. Sally (Brooke White, American Idol) is met with the news that her best friend from college has died in a tragic accident on a Peace Corps mission and has named Sally the legal guardian of her four kids – 3 of them adopted from third-world countries. Now Sally and Jason (Joe Flanigan, Stargate Atlantis) must quickly learn to parent this instant family and help the kids deal with the culture clash of life in America. The story is both humorous and heartwarming, revealing how fulfilling life can be when you look beyond your own plans and invest in the lives of others.

Technical difficulties prevented me from being able to preview A Change of Plans. However, knowing the quality of the previous films and the talented acting ability of Joe Flannigan and Phylicia Rashad,  I have no doubt that this film will be well worth the watching and a heartwarming family story to share with your kids. I know I'll be tuning in for sure!
